There is no standard timeline. How long it takes to reach 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours depends on how often you upload, how long people watch and how quickly your audience grows. What you can do is work out your own pace: 4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes of public long-form watch time within 12 months, and dividing that by your average view duration tells you how many views you need.
Key points
- Full YPP (ad revenue): 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
- Expanded YPP (fan funding and Shopping): 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days.
- Starting February 1, 2027, new applicants for ad revenue will need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views, still with 1,000 subscribers.
- Watch hours from the Shorts feed, private, unlisted and deleted videos, and ads do not count.
- Once you apply, YouTube says review usually takes about a month.
What are the YouTube Partner Program requirements?
To earn ad revenue, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days. You also need to live in a region where YPP is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account, and have an AdSense account linked.
| Tier | Subscribers | Watch time or Shorts views | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP | 500 | 3 public uploads in 90 days, plus 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3M Shorts views in 90 days | Fan funding (memberships, Super Thanks and similar) and YouTube Shopping, where available |
| Full YPP (current) | 1,000 | 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10M Shorts views in 90 days | Ad revenue sharing plus the expanded features |
| Full YPP for new applicants from Feb 1, 2027 | 1,000 | 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20M Shorts views in 90 days | Ad revenue sharing plus the expanded features |

What is changing in 2027?
YouTube has announced that from February 1, 2027, new creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, along with 1,000 subscribers, to join YPP for ad revenue. Channels that are already in YPP are not affected by the new entry thresholds. Fan funding and Shopping eligibility at 500 subscribers stays the same.
The same announcement adds an activity rule for partners and sets a deadline of January 31, 2027 to accept the updated terms. If you are close to the current thresholds, it is worth applying as soon as you qualify.
Which watch hours count toward 4,000?
Only public watch time on long-form videos counts. YouTube’s eligibility page excludes watch hours from:
- Shorts viewed in the Shorts feed
- Private and unlisted videos
- Deleted videos
- Ad campaigns
- Live streams that were not converted to public videos afterward
Shorts count through the separate 10-million-views route instead. Pick the route that suits your content. Mixing the two does not combine into a single threshold.
How do I calculate how long it will take me?
Use your own numbers from YouTube Studio. Watch time needed is 240,000 minutes (4,000 hours). Divide by your average view duration to see how many long-form views you need within 12 months:
| Average view duration | Views needed for 4,000 hours | Views needed for 8,000 hours (2027 rule) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | 120,000 | 240,000 |
| 4 minutes | 60,000 | 120,000 |
| 6 minutes | 40,000 | 80,000 |
| 10 minutes | 24,000 | 48,000 |
Then compare that number with your current monthly views. If your channel gets 5,000 long-form views a month at a 6-minute average, you would reach 4,000 hours in about 8 months, provided nothing drops out of the rolling 12-month window. Run the same check for subscribers using your monthly net gain.
Where can I track my progress?
YouTube Studio shows your progress toward each threshold in the Earn section.
On desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Earn in the left menu.
- Review the subscriber, watch-hour and Shorts-view progress bars, and click Apply when you are eligible.
On mobile
- Open the YouTube Studio app.
- Tap Earn at the bottom.
- Check your progress and follow the prompts to apply.
For a quick look at any channel’s public subscriber count, you can use our live sub count tool. Your own exact count is always in Studio.
What happens after I apply?
YouTube reviews the channel as a whole, and according to its help page this usually takes about a month. If you are rejected, you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days. After repeated rejections, the wait to reapply can be 90 days. Once you are in, monetization can be turned off if a channel stays inactive for long periods, so keep uploading.
Can I speed up reaching 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours?
The levers you control are upload consistency, retention and discovery. Longer average view duration means fewer views are needed (see the table above), so improving retention and CTR pays off twice. Promoting videos where your audience already spends time also helps; our guide on promoting a YouTube channel covers the options.
A note on buying watch hours: we offer a watch hours service, but YouTube’s fake engagement policy prohibits artificially inflating metrics, and YouTube says it removes traffic and subscribers it identifies as spam. YPP reviewers also look at the channel as a whole. Weigh that risk before buying any metric.

FAQ
How long does it take to get 4,000 watch hours?
It depends on your views and average view duration. 4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes. At a 6-minute average you need about 40,000 public long-form views within 12 months.
Do Shorts views count toward the 4,000 watch hours?
No. Watch time from the Shorts feed does not count toward watch hours. Shorts have their own route: 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days, along with 1,000 subscribers.
Is the 4,000-hour requirement changing?
Yes, for new applicants. From February 1, 2027, YouTube will require 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers. Existing partners are not affected.
Can I monetize with 500 subscribers?
Partly. Expanded YPP at 500 subscribers unlocks fan funding and Shopping if you also meet the upload and watch-time or Shorts-view rules, but ad revenue needs the full requirements.
How long does YPP review take?
YouTube says it usually takes about a month. If you are not accepted, you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days.
