YouTube traffic sources show where viewers were when they found your video. Examples include the Home feed (Browse features), the suggestions next to other videos (Suggested videos), YouTube search, the Shorts feed, or another website (External). You’ll find the breakdown on the Reach tab of a video in YouTube Analytics. It tells you which kind of discovery is working, so you know whether to work on your search titles, your thumbnails, or promotion outside YouTube.
Key points
- Find it in YouTube Studio: Content > a video > Analytics > Reach > “How viewers find this video”.
- Browse features covers Home, Subscriptions, Watch Later and other browsing surfaces.
- Suggested videos counts views from suggestions next to or after other videos, and from links in video descriptions.
- YouTube search has its own report showing the exact search terms.
- “Direct or unknown” includes direct URL entry, bookmarks, signed-out viewers and unidentified apps.

What does each YouTube traffic source mean?
| Traffic source | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Browse features | Home, Subscriptions, Watch Later, Trending/Explore and other browsing features |
| Suggested videos | Suggestions next to or after other videos, and links in video descriptions |
| YouTube search | YouTube search results (with a search terms report) |
| Shorts | The Shorts vertical viewing experience |
| Channel pages | Your channel page or other channels’ pages |
| Playlists | Any playlist with your video, including “Liked videos” |
| Notifications | Notifications and emails to subscribers, including belled subscribers |
| End screens / Video cards | Your end screens, and cards in other videos |

Which traffic source is best?
None is “best”. Each one points to a different lever. A healthy channel usually gets views from several sources, and the mix depends on your format:
- Search-heavy videos (tutorials, how-tos) keep getting views when the title and description match how people phrase the question. Look at the search terms report for wording ideas.
- Browse and Suggested traffic depends on viewers clicking your thumbnail and then continuing to watch. See retention, watch time and CTR explained.
- External traffic shows that promotion outside YouTube is working. Our guide on promoting your YouTube channel has ideas.
- Shorts traffic behaves differently from long-form. Compare the two in long-form vs Shorts.
Why are my views higher than my impressions?
YouTube explains that if a large share of your traffic comes from outside YouTube, views can exceed impressions. Not every view starts from a thumbnail impression, and impressions on external sites or end screens aren’t counted in impressions CTR.
How do paid views show up in traffic sources?
If you run your video as a YouTube ad, those views appear as “YouTube advertising”. YouTube says views from skippable ads longer than 10 seconds count if watched for 30 seconds or to the end, and non-skippable ads never count as views. Traffic from third-party “view” services is a different matter. YouTube’s fake engagement policy says it doesn’t count artificial traffic and may take action against channels that use it. If you ever consider paid promotion, including services like our YouTube views, check that it is consistent with YouTube’s rules first. Google Ads campaigns are the method YouTube itself supports.
How can I use traffic sources to grow?
- Find your top two sources for each of your best videos.
- For search-led videos, reuse the real search terms in titles, descriptions and chapters where they fit naturally.
- For browse- or suggested-led videos, test clearer thumbnails and stronger first 30 seconds.
- For external-led videos, double down on the communities and sites that send viewers.
- Check how your videos rank for target keywords with our YouTube rank tracker.
