“Shadowban” isn’t a term Instagram uses in its help center. What creators usually mean is that Instagram has stopped recommending their posts or account to people who don’t follow them. On a professional account, you can check this directly in Account Status, which shows whether your content and account are eligible for recommendations and lets you request a review.
Key points
- Instagram’s Recommendations Guidelines decide what can be suggested to non-followers in Explore, Reels, Feed recommendations, Search and Suggested Accounts.
- Your followers can still see content that is not eligible for recommendations.
- Professional accounts can see recommendation eligibility in Settings > Account Status, and request a review there.
- Posts from private accounts don’t appear on hashtag pages.
- A drop in reach can also come from an outage, a change in what your audience engages with, or your content itself.
What is an Instagram shadowban?
It is the informal name for reduced visibility to non-followers. Instagram’s help center describes recommendation guidelines that apply to content shown to people who don’t follow you. Content can stay on the platform and in your followers’ feeds while being left out of Explore, Reels recommendations and Search.
This is different from removal. Removed content breaks the Community Guidelines and is taken down. Content that is ineligible for recommendations stays up, but Instagram won’t push it to new audiences.
What are the signs your reach is being limited?
No single metric proves it, but these patterns are worth checking:
- Reach from non-followers drops sharply in Insights while reach from followers holds steady.
- New posts stop appearing on hashtag pages or in search, even when checked from an account that doesn’t follow you.
- Account Status shows a warning about recommendations.
- The drop starts right after you post something that could be borderline under the Recommendations Guidelines.
A drop in reach that hits everyone at the same time may be a platform issue instead. Check whether Instagram is having problems with our Instagram status checker, and read how to tell an outage from an app problem.
How do I check if my Instagram account is shadowbanned?
Use Account Status first. It is Instagram’s own answer, rather than a guess.
On mobile (iPhone or Android)
- Go to your profile and tap the menu (three lines) in the top right.
- Tap Account Status. Depending on the app version, it may sit under Settings and activity.
- Look at the entries for content and account recommendations. A green check means eligible.
- If something isn’t eligible, tap it to see the content involved and the option to request a review.
On desktop
Account Status is designed for the mobile app. If you only use a browser, check reach trends in Professional Dashboard insights instead, and open Account Status the next time you are on your phone.
A manual hashtag test
- Post with one or two specific hashtags.
- From an account that doesn’t follow you, open those hashtag pages and look at recent posts.
- Repeat over a few posts before concluding anything. Hashtag pages don’t promise to show every post.
If your account is private, this test will always fail: Instagram says posts from private accounts don’t show up on hashtag pages.
Why does Instagram limit recommendations?
The bar for recommendations is higher than the bar for staying on the platform. Instagram’s Recommendations Guidelines, linked from its Account Status help page, describe what it avoids suggesting to non-followers. In practice, the usual causes are:
- Recent content removals or a Community Guidelines strike.
- Posts that come close to the line on sensitive topics, even if they are allowed.
- Reposted or unoriginal content.
- Spam-like behavior, such as bursts of follows, likes or comments, or repetitive captions and hashtags.
Instagram limits each post to 5 hashtags. Stuffing more into a caption doesn’t add reach, and comments with more than five hashtags won’t post.
How do I fix limited reach on Instagram?
Fix what Account Status flags, then give it time.
- Remove or edit flagged content. Account Status lists the posts or profile elements involved.
- Request a review if you think Instagram got it wrong. The option is on the flagged item in Account Status.
- Stop automation and spam-like activity. Disconnect third-party apps that like, follow or comment for you.
- Use relevant hashtags only. Our hashtag generator gives ideas to start from. Pick the few that actually fit the post.
- Keep posting original work. Even with recommendations fully restored, eligibility doesn’t guarantee a post will be recommended.
Paid followers or likes can also look like inauthentic activity. Meta’s Spam policy says it doesn’t allow buying or selling engagement. We sell Instagram growth services such as followers, but please weigh that platform risk, especially while your account is already restricted.
How long does an Instagram shadowban last?
Instagram doesn’t publish a fixed duration. Once flagged content is removed or a review succeeds, Account Status updates to show eligibility again. Keep checking it instead of relying on a countdown you read elsewhere. For more on how discovery works, see our guide to the Instagram discovery system.

FAQ
Is Instagram shadowban real?
Instagram doesn’t use the word, but it does limit which content and accounts are recommended to non-followers. Professional accounts can see this in Account Status.
How do I know if I am shadowbanned on Instagram?
Open your profile menu, then Account Status. It shows whether your content and account are eligible to be recommended and lists any content that is causing a problem.
Can my followers still see my posts if I am shadowbanned?
Yes. Recommendation limits apply to non-followers in places like Explore, Reels and Search. Your followers can still see your content.
Why are my hashtags not working?
Common reasons are a private account (private posts don’t appear on hashtag pages), using more than the 5-hashtag limit, or content that isn’t eligible for recommendations.
How do I get rid of a shadowban?
Remove or edit what Account Status flags, request a review if you disagree, and stop any automated or spam-like activity.
